With that figure, you adjust the device until each feed gives its share of the daily serving. It's worth doing this with one that counts in grams too, because what it really measures is volume, and not all dry foods weigh the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a dog food portion dispenser?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It's any device that splits dry food into servings, instead of leaving the bag or the bowl out for the dog to help itself. There are three ways of measuring the serving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By turns of an auger.<\/strong> Each turn pushes a volume of dry food, and the device converts it into grams. Es el sistema de los comederos Producan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>With a measuring cup.<\/strong> It's the classic manual portion dispenser: a cup or a scoop with markings that you fill from the bag.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much dry food should the portion dispenser release per feed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The daily serving divided by the number of feeds. If your dog eats 450 grams a day and the portion dispenser releases three feeds, each one has to give around 150 grams. The daily serving is shown on your dry food bag according to the dog's weight, and for large dogs it's summarised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comederos-automaticos-producan.es\/en\/cuanto-pienso-come-perro-grande\/\">in the table of grams a day by weight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We explain how many feeds to set and at what times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comederos-automaticos-producan.es\/en\/dispensador-comida-perros-programable\/\">in the post on what schedule to set on a programmable dispenser<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you measure what a dry food portion dispenser releases?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an automatic portion dispenser, this is the method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Catch what drops in one feed in a clean bowl.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weigh it on the scales, subtracting the weight of the bowl.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat with two more feeds and work out the average of the three.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the average falls short or goes over, adjust the serving on the timer and weigh again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 tres tomas y no una? La media es lo que come el perro a lo largo de la semana, que es lo que cuenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does the serving change when you switch dry food?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because not all dry foods weigh the same. A portion dispenser actually measures volume, whether by turns, by time or with a cup, and a litre of one dry food doesn't weigh the same as a litre of another: the size, shape and density of the kibble change. With the new food, the same feed can give quite a few grams more or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So every time you switch dry food, weigh three feeds again before accepting the serving as right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need a portion dispenser that weighs to the gram?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solo si el veterinario le ha puesto al perro una dieta con una cantidad exacta, por ejemplo para bajar de peso o por una enfermedad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For other dogs, a serving that varies by a few grams from one feed to the next isn't usually a problem if the average is right and the dog keeps its weight.
