Dry kibble absorbs moisture from the air. When it does, it first softens and clumps \u2014 which is where feeders with narrow ducts or augers jam \u2014 and then it starts to go mouldy. Mould in dry food isn't always visible, but it doesn't agree with the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An open sack propped on the garage floor, or a bowl left full outdoors, are the two quickest ways to waste dry food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It's an international standard and the two numbers say different things. The 6<\/strong> is total protection against dust. The 5<\/strong> means it stands up to water jets from any direction without letting any in. In plain terms: rain and a hose, yes. Submerging it, no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On top of that comes the sheet steel: riveted galvanised steel, 0.8 mm<\/strong>. Galvanising is a layer of zinc that takes the rust instead of the steel, which is why one of our feeders can spend years outdoors without rotting. Plastic left out in rain and sun ends up cracking; thin sheet metal dents with a large dog's first shove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It needs no maintenance, but before winter it's worth emptying it, wiping the inside with a dry cloth and checking the lid closes properly.
